It’s already late December, which honestly feels impossible because I swear finals were like two days ago. But here we are — winter break is in full swing, and it’s been a really good mix of everything I love: a little traveling, lots of cozy moments, catching up with people I don’t get to see during the year, and just having some breathing room after the whirlwind of fall semester.

My Solo Broadway Adventure: Hadestown

Right before I flew back to Korea, I decided to treat myself to something I’ve wanted to do for a while — see a Broadway show by myself. And not just any show — Hadestown. The actual Broadway version of Hadestown.

I managed to get tickets just before Jordan Fisher left the cast, which still feels like a tiny personal miracle considering how fast his shows were selling out. I’ve listened to the Hadestown soundtrack more times than I can count, but seeing it live on Broadway with the whole cast and staging was on a completely different level. The lighting, the set design, the choreography — everything was so intentional and beautiful. Even though I technically knew everything that was going to happen, I still found myself holding my breath during some of the scenes. The tension they build on stage is just unreal.

Doing a solo trip for it ended up being really nice, too. There’s something about experiencing a show like that on your own — it’s quieter, more personal in a way. I was fully able to take it all in without any distractions. Afterwards, I met up with Minseo (who was also in New York at the time!) for dinner. We went to a very fancy Korean fusion restaurant where all the ingredients were Korean, but everything was plated and prepared in a very Western fine-dining style. Tiny portions, beautiful plating, and the kind of food that makes you pause after every bite because it’s just that good. We spent the entire meal catching up and quietly admiring how beautiful everything was.

Back in Korea: Little Adventures and Reunions

Coming back to Korea always feels a little surreal after being away for so long during the semester. There’s something very comforting about stepping back into familiar routines — seeing my family, eating my favorite food, being back in my room — but this winter break has also had a lot of fun little moments that made it feel extra special.

One of the first things Minseo and I did was make a suncatcher together. We’ve always liked doing little craft projects like that — something peaceful about sitting at a table, working with our hands, and talking about whatever’s been on our minds. The suncatcher is now hanging in my window, catching the soft winter light, and it just makes me happy every time I see it.

Something that made this break feel even more surreal was that two of my friends from the US came to Korea. One of them is actually studying abroad here for a semester, so we got to meet up, which honestly felt a little strange in the best way. Usually, I’m the one flying across the world to see friends, so having them here in my hometown — walking through streets I’ve grown up on, eating food I usually recommend to people through pictures — was kind of surreal. My worlds overlapping like that doesn’t happen often, so it was really nice to share this side of my life with them in person.

Musicals, Cafes, and A Very Pink Afternoon Tea

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Korea trip without fitting in at least one musical. This time, I went to see the Korean version of Aladdin, because, you guessed it, 박강현 was performing. If you know, you know. Listening to his voice live is just absolutely unreal. Every single time I see him perform, I leave the theater slightly in shock at how good he is. Seeing Aladdin in Korean adds this extra layer of familiarity and warmth to it for me.

I also had one of the most aesthetic afternoon teas at the Swarovski café with one of my juniors from NLCS. Technically, it wasn’t a Wicked-themed tea, but the entire tea set was pink and green, so naturally, we decided it was close enough. We talked a lot about college life — for me, being halfway through junior year now (still feels weird to say that), and for her, being deep in college applications. It’s strange how quickly time shifts like that. I remember being in her shoes not that long ago, stressing over applications, and now I’m the one giving advice. But it felt really nice to be able to talk through it all and hopefully make things feel a little less overwhelming for her.

And, as always, Korea has completely spoiled me with its cafes and desserts. I’ve had some of the best pastries and drinks this break — from perfect chestnut lattes to little holiday cakes that look almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

A New Hair Era

And yes — I finally cut my hair! First time cutting it into a bob since I was a sophomore in high school. It always takes me forever to actually go through with a haircut, but I’ve been thinking about it for a while, and winter break felt like the perfect time for a small reset. Honestly, I’m loving it so far. It feels fresh, and somehow makes every outfit look a little more put-together without me doing anything. Change is good sometimes.

Wrapping Up

All in all, this break has been exactly what I needed — a mix of cozy, exciting, reflective, and fun. Some musicals, lots of people I love, and plenty of good food along the way. It’s nice having this pause before heading into what’s sure to be another busy spring semester.
